The Spirit of Prayer

An Unconventional View in Verse

Aug 27, 2026

Pray in Spirit, always.

*Christian Bible

Your gaze is full of love,
mine is a prayer
to you who created your own self.

*Guru Nanak. Poems from the Sikh Sacred Tradition.

We are destined not merely to pray
as something we do, but
to become and be prayer as
something we are.

Then, we pray from being prayer, rather than
only doing prayer or offering prayers.

One could say,

"Prayer prays" or

"God prays with God" or

"God is the unceasing prayer" -
and we enter into it at some
time and place.

If you pray, truly pray, and not just pray words,
you will be led into a space, sooner or later, where
you are no longer praying as a something or a someone:

Christian, Jew, Buddhist, Muslim, Hindu, Taoist, man, woman,
straight, gay, white, black, brown ...

You will come to discover
Spirit's greatest secret is you yourself,
so Spirit itself.

And, prayer becomes the turning of
the whole self towards this
hiddenness and silence where
solitude joins with solitude.

Here, you are neither trying to be
holy or not holy, right or wrong, good or bad -
you are and prayer is.

Prayer, then, is a means to shape you into prayer,
not a kind of prayer,
simply prayer.

This is the freedom of Prayer in Spirit,
prayer that leads from words into silence and, then,
from silence back into words, and the freedom of the one who
truly prays from the Heart -
not their heart, the Heart.
